<p>Atkins was in the media again because of new study results indicating lowered cholesterol. I went to the Atkins book yet again with a more open mind, and decided to try the diet. I liked the contrarian view point to the current AMA position of the low fat diet, which seemed to be producing a society of increasing obesity. Atkins view of sugar as the culprit making you fat, not fat, made sense and the extra work from all the protein for the kidneys&#0133; it&#8217;s benign. I wanted to use his diet as a tool to get myself entirely off of any sugar.</p>

<p>I started out on the high protein, low carb aspect of the diet. As I reintroduced the animal proteins into my diet I could feel myself get stronger and the colds, finally stopped. I also saw my muscle bellies start to open and swell again. The cold of winter was not as painful as it had been while on my vegan diet.</p>
<p>I then summoned up the courage to start bringing fats into my diet, including bacon, egg yolks, cream cheese, heavy cream, whipped cream, even bacon rinds. On a daily basis I would marvel at having eaten these &quot;forbidden foods&quot; only to awaken the next day thin, svelte. I couldn&#8217;t believe this, result! I was loving eating all these foods so familiar yet banished since&#0133;childhood</p>
<p>I was in full swing eating the high fat, high protein, low carb diet at the time when the pictures on my website were taken. www.vitalsignsfitness.com I felt strong, but I had no energy!!! My walks on the beach were lethargic, I had to force myself to go that extra mile. I was thin but I felt like a beached whale. My love affair with Atkins continued a few more months. I followed his prescriptions religiously.</p>
<p>Eventually I had to add more carbs, I needed more energy. By carbs I mean vegetables, salads and whole grains. At this point I gained back the total of two pounds I had lost on Atkins. Body fat went from 16% to 18%, my energy was better. After 7 months I decided it was time to get the blood checked out and to my horror discovered that my cholesterol which had always been around 150 had rocketed up to 300!! Luckily my HDL to LDL ratio was still at a healthy level. Thanks to my forcing myself to exercise, I kept my HDLs high.</p>
<p>I immediately started drinking hot lemon juice with cayenne pepper every morning to clean my blood. I have now thrown away all the high fat foods and have once again, come back full circle to moderation and balance. A balanced diet. It takes a little more discipline but my energy is back and I can now eat the same meals as my husband so dinner preparation is simpler. My weight has not changed since I gradually introduced the carbs. I avoid at all costs the &quot;white foods&quot; flour, sugar, milk. I drink unsweetened soy milk I avoid foods in packages, boxes and bags. I feel a fine layer of fat but that&#8217;s okay its winter, I need it, and in the summer, heat always melts it off. I am completely off sugar and alcohol to keep blood sugar low.</p>

<p>Can you acknowledge how many times in the past year you have openly told yourself, &quot;from now on, I start working out every day so that I can get in shape, lose some weight, and look better?&quot; Now, think of how many times you actually made this happen? I am almost sure that you have not had a serious reason for not starting to exercise, you were either lazy or tired, am I right? The truth is that laziness and tiredness are the top two opponents of fitness.</p>

<h4>Is it a sin to be lazy?</h4>
<p>I believe that there is not a single person in the world who would honestly say that he/she has never been lazy. Even people whose whole lives are surrounded around sports tend to get lazy sometimes. It is simply in our nature to get sluggish, and honestly it is very hard to fight this feeling. It is normal to relax and get lazy sometimes but we should not let it happen very often.</p>
<p>Many years ago in Christianity laziness was viewed as one of the top seven deadly sins. Although over time the nature of this concept has overcome a big change, today it is still perceived negatively. Psychology defines laziness as a mental problem, medicine as a medical condition, and biology defines it as an instinctively behavior of saving energy.The only positive effect that comes out of laziness is that we can relax by doing nothing. Doing nothing sometimes is a pretty good feeling but we definitely do not want to make it our habit.</p>
<h4>What causes laziness?</h4>
<p>The major cause of laziness is the excessive consumption of carbohydrates. On one hand, if you consume a big quantity of carbohydrates at once you would start feeling lazy and sleepy. If you get used to consuming a lot of them on a daily basis this would lead to a permanent unwillingness for your body to move. On the other hand, if you do not consume enough nutritional products you would cause a delay in your metabolism which would also result in a lazy behavior.</p>
<p>Active athletes, who overestimate their physical abilities, suffer from laziness, caused by lack of proteins. When this is combined with overtraining they tend to get into the so called &quot;sports depression&quot; (frequent and painful muscle pain). That is the main reason why you need to watch what you eat. Never eat too much but never skip meals as well. Eating various nutritional products on a daily basis is the key to success.</p>
<h4>Laziness or exhaustion?</h4>
<p>It happens often that laziness is confused with the symptoms of exhaustion. The laziness you could experience after being sick for a couple of days, after a lot of exercising, or because of a stressful situation at work, are all classic symptom of exhaustion but not of laziness. The best cure for all the situation above is to relax until you start feeling better.</p>
<h4>The victims of fatigue</h4>
<p>Fatigue is a mental or a physical exhaustion. Although its main cause is the lack of sleep, sleepiness is just one of the symptoms for this condition. Other reasons are: headache, general weakness, muscle pain, difficulty concentrating, slowed reflexes, and irritability. Tired people lose track of the level of their exhaustion and do not realize that if they do not take any action their condition will get even worse.</p>
<h4>Fitness against laziness and exhaustion</h4>
<p>It is a widespread myth that if one wants to be healthy, get in shape and lose some weight, one has to exercise a lot. As a result of this belief people started looking at fitness as a job that would only make sense if practiced to a level of exhaustion. If you start exercising to exhaustion, what do you think will happen? You will for sure overtrain. Now, the emphasis of exercising is placed on the physical activity, rather than on its intensity. It is proven that even light exercising, if done in the correct way, can definitely get you in shape and make you look better.</p>
<p>Remember that regular fitness work increases your energy, reduces your stress level, and makes your entire body and mind feel good.</p>

<p>The phrase &quot;You are what you eat&quot; may be true. Researchers have found that certain vitamins and minerals that are found in food may have an affect on the chemistry of the brain. It has been shown that foods have an affect on neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that relay information from one neuron to another. Anything that influences these messengers has an affect on the person&#039;s mood. This proves how much of an impact food can have on your mood and how you act.</p>
<p><span id="more-9"></span></p>
<p>One example that proves this theory is the research that has been done for omega-3 fatty acids. After strenuous research, it has been shown that these acids are very effective at fighting depression. One particular study had a selection of pregnant women taking over 3 grams of omega-3 fatty acids for a daily basis. These women had fewer symptoms of depression when compared to those who took a placebo. The best sources for these acids are found in fish. Particular fish such as sardines or herring have a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish-oil supplements have a great amount of these acids as well.</p>
<p>The three vitamins, folic acid, B6, and B12, have also been proven to affect the mood as well. It has been shown that people who have a low level of folic acid in their blood are more likely to have an increased rate of depression. Best foods for folic acid are oranges, soy beans, beats, and green vegetables.</p>
<p>Vitamin D has also been proven to affect the mood. Studies have shown that this particular vitamin play an important role on SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Seasonal affective disorder is when a person may feel depressed or anxious during winter. This takes place because the body is not getting a sufficient amount of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is actually manufactured whenever we bare ourselves to sunlight. Days are shorter during the winter months, thus the reason for depression or anxiousness. Vitamin D is bit difficult to find in most foods. If you feel that you are not getting enough of this vitamin, it&#039;s best to take a supplement. The best form of this vitamin to take is D3. It is also known as cholecalciferol.</p>
