Muscles respond better when challenged differently. Doing the same routine day after day allows the body to become very efficient at the exercise. Muscle is the core of your metabolism and the more you have, the more fat you can burn. On the other hand, losing muscle slows your metabolism and contributes to weight gain. Muscle biopsies done the day after a person exercises vigorously show bleeding into the muscles and disruption of the Z-bands that hold muscle filaments together. You are not supposed to exercise vigorously again until the muscle soreness disappears.</p>
<p><span id="more-146"></span></p>
<p>Aerobic cross-training is effective for weight loss because your are toning and training the fat-burning systems of more of your muscles. It turns more of your muscles into 24-hour fat-burning machines! Aerobic cross-training refers to using two to three different types of aerobic exercise during an exercise session. For example, if you plan to exercise for 60 minutes, you might start with 20 minutes of walking or jogging, followed by 20 minutes of biking, and finish with 20 minutes of rowing. Aerobic refers to the energy created using the oxygen system, and base building refers to building a base from which one can later advance from. To build an aerobic base, you must exercise in the aerobic range, gradually adding more duration to absorb the training effectively.</p>
<p>Aerobic conditioning will improve your cardiovascular system, but strength training can keep your muscles from weakening as a result of diabetes and preserve muscle mass during periods of weight loss. Weight training for people with diabetes should begin with light weights until your cardiovascular fitness increases. Aerobic exercise such as cardio machines or aerobic classes will both stimulate your cardiovascular systems as well as burn body fat while you&#8217;re doing it. Aerobics involve using the large muscles incessantly while moving the body in rhythmically motion. The routines enhance beats of the heart and smoothes the breathing repetitions.</p>
<p>Runners can also use cross-training to rehabilitate injuries, improve fitness, promote recovery, enhance motivation, rejuvenate the mind and body during breaks from formal training, enjoy competing in other endurance sports, and even stay fit through pregnancy. Related to the benefit of injury prevention, cross-training can also prolong your running career. Runners could use a kickboard to improve ankle flexibility while swimming laps, or a runner could lift weights in order to build muscle and increase upper body strength, things that running does not provide.</p>
<p>Diet and exercise are lifestyle changes and it is a step by step plan. Do not be intimidated by failed prior attempts to reach your fitness goal. Many popular diets advocate the combination of a specific technique (such as eliminating a certain food, or eating only certain combinations of foods) with reduced caloric intake, with the goal being to accelerate weight loss.</p>
<p>Cross-training lets your overused muscles rest, while pushing others into action. It&#8217;s a good remedy for over used tendons and ligaments, too. Cross-train too, with the help of a recumbent work out bike that visually prompts you to perform strength exercises, so you get the health benefits of both. If it sounds intense, don&#8217;t worry.</p>
<p> Exercisers should make sure they change their routines at least two to three times during a 60 minute workout, that way you maintain workout efficiency and prevent boredom. Ideally, having at least two different activities should be alternated daily or conducted within the same workout.</p>
<p>Exercise scientists believe that, of the five basic components, aerobic endurance is the most important in helping improve overall health and reducing the risk of disease. Guidelines by the ACSM for maintaining cardiovascular-respiratory fitness suggest activities that raise the heart rate to its training zone (between 60 to 90 percent of the maximum heart rate) for at least 20 minutes, three times a week. Exercise has so many health benefits that I think all of us should make an effort to keep in mind these forgotten benefits. As an unintended side effect, we&#8217;ll still achieve that weight loss we want so bad. So now is the time to put down that bowl of ice cream, put on your sweats and move out.</p>
<p>After a couple of weeks of cross-training you will begin to see the benefits of your effort and the inches and pounds will start to disappear, and you will have a whole new perspective on life.</p>

<p>Are you struggling to lose weight? You are not on your own, millions of people around the world search in vain for the &quot;magic bullet&quot; that will help them in their battle to lose some pounds. You have probably heard it said that losing weight is easy &#8211; &quot;just eat less and exercise regularly&quot;. If only it was that easy? In essence, however, that statement is a good summation of what you need to do in order to lose weight.</p>

<p>The importance of regular exercise in achieving and maintaining your ideal weight cannot be stressed enough. Aside from the weight loss benefits, the overall improvements in one&#8217;s health and well being from the simple expedient of a regular exercise routine can be enormous. But what kind of exercise is the most effective for weight loss? Most experts agree that cardio-vascular exercise when carried out on a regular and consistent basis is key to an effective weight loss program.</p>
<p>As consumers we are bombarded with advertisements proclaiming the merits of the latest fitness equipment that can be used in order to shed some unwanted fat, but one particular item of fitness equipment continues to dominate the market as the ultimate device for achieving a cardio-vascular workout and thus assisting you with your weight loss goals. This device is the treadmill.</p>
<p>Treadmills have maintained their popularity in the fitness equipment market despite competition from many new and novel types of exercise equipment. Many of these new devices are popular for a short period during which time they are frequently given exposure in magazines and infomercials . But there popularity soon wanes and they become yesterday&#8217;s fitness fad. This is not the case with the exercise treadmill which has retained it&#8217;s popularity with both the average family member who wants to lose weight and keep in shape and the professional athlete.</p>
<p>One of the reasons why fitness treadmills have retained their popularity is that they allow users to enjoy one of the most natural forms of exercise (walking and running) and let them carry out this exercise in a controlled environment. Walking exercises the whole body and doesn&#8217;t require any complicated training. It is &quot;hard wired&quot; into the brain and is one of the first things that we humans learn to do.</p>
<p>As a form of exercise though, walking and running can have some drawbacks. These are nearly all environmental and are taken care of by the controlled environment that the treadmill provides. These drawbacks include weather conditions which can be either too hot, too cold, rain, wind or snow. If you live in the city it may not be practical to run through crowded streets and there is always the issue of your own personal safety with the possibility of an attack from a stranger or stray dog.</p>
<p>Compared to other types of fitness equipment, treadmills are easy to use and don&#8217;t require you to move your body in an unnatural way, or restrict the natural movements of your limbs. They can also help to mitigate a lot of injuries that can be sustained by running on asphalt by virtue of their cushioned running surface.</p>
<p>Fitness treadmills have the advantage of being suitable for virtually any age group from children (with supervision) to the elderly and are often used in medical centers as a rehabilitation tool to help people in their recovery from injury. They are also suitable for any type of fitness level from beginner to professional athlete.</p>
<p>The cardio-vascular exercise that you engage in when using a treadmill is an excellent way to lose weight and studies have shown that you can burn more calories on the treadmill than any other type of fitness equipment including stair machines, rowing machines, stationary cycles or ski machines. For the many people who are using a treadmill in order to lose weight, however, the secret to success is consistency.</p>
<p>As with all exercise you need to establish a routine so that your treadmill exercise sessions become part of your everyday life. It is important to make your workout session a part of your daily routine until it becomes something that you do automatically without having to give it much thought.</p>
<p>Most people who own a treadmill have it set up in a room in their house or apartment where it is as easy to use for their daily workout as going into the bathroom to take a shower. The very nature of the treadmill with the quite, measured rolling of the walking surface, the comfortable room temperature and the safety provided by your home all contribute to the pleasant feelings you will associate with using a home treadmill.</p>
<p>A further benefit the treadmill offers is the ability to vary different parameters of the workout in order make the workout more novel and interesting. Most modern motorized treadmills offer the ability to vary the speed of the belt and incline of the running surface during the workout. These changes can be done manually during the workout, or be pre-programmed as part of a suite of programs built into the machine. Some treadmills also offer the user the function to design their own programs which can then be re run whenever the user wishes.</p>
<p>Many users look forward to their time on the treadmill, for in addition to the health benefits, they also welcome the special time they have to themselves, when they can ponder and reflect about events in their lives. But for people who are not so introspective many modern treadmills are fitted with music systems and even flat screen TV&#8217;s in order to keep the user entertained.</p>
<p>When using your treadmill it is a good idea to add some variety by introducing some interval training sessions into your workout. This should comprise of brief periods of intense exercise mixed in with your regular treadmill workouts. You may for example arrange to do a one minute interval of fast walking every for every five minutes of regular walking and repeat this throughout your session.</p>
<p>By varying between a steady, comfortable pace and brief periods of sustained effort you will be able to increase your aerobic fitness level gradually over time. What you are actually doing is pushing your anaerobic threshold, thus forcing your body to accept a greater intensity of exercise. This will in turn help you to achieve the weight loss targets that you have set for your self.</p>
<p>The treadmill continues to be the ideal choice for anyone looking for fitness equipment in order to shed some pounds.</p>

<h4>1. Will you burn more calories from fat if you exercise first thing in the morning on an empty stomach?</h4>
<p>The substrate that most effectively powers your workout is carbohydrate. Fat contributes, but carbohydrates in the form of glucose are the main exercise fuel. After a night&#8217;s sleep, the muscle&#8217;s are greatly depleted of glycogen (stored glucose) and therefore lack the energy substrate they need for exercise. In addition, the brain utilizes glucose for all its fuel needs. Consequently, exercising first in the morning on an empty stomach can impair the muscles and some brain functions. You should have a light carbohydrate snack (e.g., fresh fruit, yogurt and trail mix) before working out, to properly &quot;fuel up&quot; and safe guard themselves from bodily harm.</p>
<h4>2. How many more calories do you burn with the addition of each pound of muscle?</h4>
<p>The scientific estimation is approximately 7 kcal per pound (Elia 1992). However, the key point is not so much that caloric yield increases from this additional muscle; rather, it is that the person becomes much more capable of working out longer and harder. It is this training effect that adds to the caloric deficit from exercise.</p>
<h4>3. How does high-intensity interval training (HIT) help you burn more fat?</h4>
<p>As exercise intensity increases, the body uses more carbohydrate as fuel. However, scientists feel that at the cellular level this overloading stimulus also involves some of the same molecular signaling messages that induce increases in muscle capillary density, mitochondria proteins (energy factory of cells), fatty-acid oxidation (burning) enzymes and other regulatory proteins (Burgomaster et al.2008; Baar 2006). So, the connection with HIT and improved fat metabolism appears to be associated with adaptation changes that occur at the molecular level of muscle.</p>
<h4>4. Why is caloric expenditure lower during upper-body exercise?</h4>
<p>Upper-body exercise is generally complicated by the small muscle mass in the upper body relative to the lower body . This muscle mass is less effective at inducing the return of blood flow to the heart, thus decreasing the volume of blood pumped by the heart each beat. Also, for a given intensity , contraction of the upper-body musculature provides greater resistance to blood flow than occurs with lower -body exercise, resulting in a greater increase in blood pressure. These factors lead to a lower energy (caloric) expenditure from the upper-body muscles.</p>

<p>You&#8217;ve spent months in the gym and have consumed an ungodly amount of calories and yet your muscles don&#8217;t have that ripped look you hoped for. What went wrong?</p>
<p>The answer may be simpler than you think.</p>
<p><span id="more-43"></span></p>
<p>Now, let me just say one thing before I give you the answer. Competitive bodybuilders have multiple tricks they use to get insanely ripped just before a competition. Maintaining that &quot;insanely ripped&quot; state would be very unhealthy for many different reasons. I&#8217;m not going to go into them today, but when you set your muscle building goals, keep them realistic.</p>
<p>Now, muscle definition (getting ripped) is a result of two main things. The first is enlarged muscles. Muscles that have been exercised and strengthened will get bigger and harder. When this happens your skin will start to stretch making your muscle more visible. The bigger your muscles get, the more definition you will see, to a certain extent.</p>
<p>I know what you may be thinking. You can&#8217;t get ripped by simply exercising. You&#8217;re right. Building muscle is just one half of the puzzle. You can have big muscles and still lack definition if you have a layer of fat covering them up. In order to truly unveil your hard earned muscle you need to burn the fat that hides it.</p>
<p>Yes, you can get some results doing just one or the other, but if you want the best results possible &#8211; do both! Big muscles just aren&#8217;t as sexy with a layer of fat over them and puny muscles with little fat aren&#8217;t all that sexy either.</p>
<p>Depending on where you are now with your muscle building will determine what you need to do now in order to achieve maximum definition. If you feel you already have good size, start with a good <a href="http://www.fitnesstips4you.com/recommends/abdominal_workout" style=""  rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='http://www.fitnesstips4you.com/recommends/abdominal_workout';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">fat burning</a> diet and workout program that will allow you to maintain muscle as well.</p>
<p>On the other hand, if you don&#8217;t have the size you truly desire, I would recommend staying on a muscle building diet and lifting program and worry about burning the fat later.</p>
<p>&quot;But wait Jim, I have been on a muscle building program for months and have had very little muscle growth. What&#8217;s my problem?&quot;</p>
<p>If you are having trouble bulking up or losing fat chances are that you need to find a program that works for you. Not all bodies respond to the same workout and/or diet. You need to identify your body type and find a program that is specific to it for maximum results. How do you do that? Well, that is for another article.</p>
<p>Bottom line &#8211; if you want to get ripped, focus on growing your muscles first. When you feel you have your ideal size then burn the fat. You just can&#8217;t do them both at the same time (as much as you might like to). Add to that consistent effort and patience and you will have a body you can truly be proud of.</p>
