<p>When Mary Lou Retton catapulted to international fame by winning the All Around Gold Medal in women&#8217;s gymnastics at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, becoming the first American woman ever to win a gold medal in gymnastics she visualized her winning and success for years prior to her great achievements. Practicing time and time again for this event in her head became the fuel for her relentless drive to become a top gymnast, motivational speaker and corporate spokesperson and also travels the world as a &#8220;Fitness Ambassador&#8221; promoting the benefits of proper nutrition and regular exercise. Mary Lou serves as national chairperson and sits on the Board of Governors of the Children&#8217;s Miracle Network. Mary Lou is following what I would call her DNA.</p>

<p>In another example, it is a sheer coincidence that the world has never been the same before the golfing phenom of Tiger Woods. A golfer whose amazing youth and amateur exploits were followed up by equally amazing professional exploits.</p>
<p>Woods was imitating his father&#8217;s golf swing at age 6 months, while still in his crib. At age 2, he appeared on the &#8220;Mike Douglas Show&#8221; and putted with Bob Hope. At age 3, he shot 48 for 9 holes, and at age 5 he was featured in Golf Digest.</p>
<p>And then the really impressive stuff started. Woods won the Optimist International Junior tournament 6 times, starting at age 8. He won three U.S. Junior Amateurs, the first to do so. His first of three straight U.S. Amateur titles came in 1994.</p>
<p>He turned pro in late summer 1996 and played 7 tournaments on the PGA Tour, needing to finish in the Top 125 to avoid having to go through Q-School. Woods won twice and posted 5 straight Top 5 finishes.</p>
<p>In 1997, he won the Masters for his first major. Woods won just once in 1998, but in 1999 he began a string of consecutive Player of the Year awards that didn&#8217;t end until Vijay Singh won the title in 2004.</p>
<p>He won 8 times in 1999, then 9 more times in 2000. Woods&#8217; 2000 season is arguably the best ever on the PGA Tour. He became the second golfer to win three professional majors in one year and broke Byron Nelson&#8217;s more-than-50-year-old scoring average record.</p>
<p>In 2001, when he won the Masters, Woods became the first golfer to hold all four professional majors at the same time.</p>
<p>Tiger Woods holds or shares the record for the low score in relation to par in all four professional majors. He&#8217;s won the U.S. Open by 15 strokes, the Masters by 12 and the British Open by 8 strokes.</p>
<p>A swing change slowed his winning a bit in 2004, and his record streak of consecutive cuts ended at 142 in 2005. But he roared back with two majors in &#8216;05.</p>
<p>Woods took a couple months off in 2006 following the death of his father, and missed the cut in his return at the U.S. Open. But then he won the next two majors and reeled off wins in the next eight tournaments he played.</p>
<p>In 2008, Woods won a dramatic playoff victory in the U.S. Open, then revealed that he was playing with a torn ACL and with a fracture in his leg. He underwent surgery shortly after and missed the next eight months. The 2009 WGC Accenture Match Play Championship marked his return. <p>Oswaldo Koch, the creator of Mastermoves, discovered the great benefits of low-intensity training in his need to recover from a nearly fatal mountain biking accident, where he landed on his head and fractured his neck.</p>

<p>To heal his fractured neck, a halo brace was placed on his head and he endured this painful treatment for several months. His doctors had told him that he could never practice sports again. When the halo brace was removed, his body was very weak and his muscles had atrophied from going months without exercise.</p>
<p>The one positive thing that arose from this bike accident is that it made him appreciate his body and health more than ever before. Oswaldo also realized how abusive other training systems based on weight lifting and running had been for his body. So he decided to re-invent his body training routine using the most natural and healthy practices. With this goal in mind, he combined fundamental techniques that he had learned from dancing, martial arts, yoga, gymnastics and massage. And with the use of 3 portable training tools, he created an extraordinary fitness system, known as Mastermoves.</p>
<p>After Oswaldo&#8217;s halo brace was removed, his doctor suggested that he rebuild his body by physiotherapy and graduated weight lifting over about a one-year period. However, with the sole use of the Mastermoves system, Oswaldo developed an amazing state of fitness within 3 months of removing the halo brace.</p>
<p>Oswaldo has taught Mastermoves to people of all ages, leading to extraordinary transformations in their bodies. For example, even people at the age of 70 greatly improved flexibility and body strength with a few easy minutes of daily home exercises. And most other people, who were training with Mastermoves, developed great coordination, flexibility and good shape in less than three months.</p>
<p>The Mastermoves training begins with 2 weeks of body conditioning with the objective of developing relaxation, flexibility and good body posture. Then, depending your level of fitness, you can practice the Basic Programs or the Intermediate Programs.</p>
<p>The Basic Programs offers two options: The General Fitness program for people of all ages, and the Weight Loss program for people that need to get leaner fast. The intermediate programs are designed to help you achieve an outstanding level of fitness. These programs are:</p>

<li>Body Strengthening</li>
<li>Body Endurance</li>
</ul>
<p>Any Mastermoves program you practice requires 15 minutes, twice a day.</p>
<p>Mastermoves is neither a science nor a philosophy; it&#8217;s just a practice that will help you develop and sustain fitness for life. And it only takes a few easy minutes a day. In fact, anyone can do it &#8211; any ordinary person can become an extraordinary person. All it takes is a commitment to practice Mastermoves every day &#8211; anytime, anywhere.</p>
<p>The intent of Core Training is to strengthen the muscle groups that stabilize your skeletal structure. These are primarily the muscles in the thoracic area that determine your posture in each position of your body.</p>

<p>It was February of 2001 and there I was, about to turn 41, when it hit me: &quot;I&#8217;m not 20 any more!&quot;</p>
<p>OK, self-realization has never been my strong suit. Not only was I out of place on the basketball court, I was out of place climbing 2 flights of stairs. There were lots of friends telling me, &quot;you&#8217;re not as young as you used to be, you have to give up on that stuff.&quot;</p>

<p>Give up? I grew up watching a nation decide to land on the moon, and then they did it. This was a country that had less computer power at all of NASA than most people have today in their cell phones, and yet they decided to go to the moon, and then did it.</p>
<p>So I figured that surely by 2001, 30 years after the moon landing, people had figured out how to make fitness easy. Well, 6 months, 5 magazine subscriptions, 2 gym memberships, 3 personal trainers and a basement full of fitness equipment later&#8230; I realized that fitness is a different kind of problem than landing on the moon. It&#8217;s a problem that people lie about.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not even talking about the intentional lies that some marketers make about products they know won&#8217;t work. I&#8217;m talking about the lies people tell themselves, that government agencies tell us all.</p>
<p>People treat fitness like it is solved, like all you have to do is work out 3 times a week and you are set.</p>
<p>Well sure, someone who works out 3 times a week is better off than someone who doesn&#8217;t work out at all. By &quot;better off,&quot; what they mean is that they don&#8217;t deteriorate as fast.</p>
<p>But I wanted more than that. I wanted an actual solution, like when you put toast in the toaster and it gets toasted, reliably.</p>
<p>I looked and saw people going through the motions. Maybe they were looking better than they would have looked and feeling better than they would have felt. But, they weren&#8217;t feeling good, weren&#8217;t getting strong, and weren&#8217;t becoming athletes.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t see 40-year-olds playing full court basketball, or taking up extreme sports, and at first I thought that was just because they weren&#8217;t trying hard enough. But then I started trying, started following the plans: doing the workout programs, taking the vitamins, and following the diet formulas.</p>
<p>They didn&#8217;t work. And that&#8217;s when I learned the big lie.</p>
<p>The big lie is that fitness is easy if you&#8217;ll just get up and move. It&#8217;s not true. Fitness isn&#8217;t easy, not at 40. Your body is complicated. It&#8217;s not as simple as standing in line and waiting your turn on the elliptical.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what my 40 years of life experience had taught me:</p>
<ul>
<li>If you Want to build a straw hut, trial and error will get the job done.</li>
<li>If you Want to build a skyscraper, you need to understand the problem and put the right pieces in place.</li>
</ul>
<p>OK, I was 40. Maybe I should have wanted to just be able to get around better and to fit into clothes well. But I wanted to play full court basketball, to learn to play ice hockey and how to downhill ski, and to actually accomplish things that most 40-year-olds gave up on. I wanted fitness to be as solved as using a microwave oven.</p>
<p>Well, it can be. But there&#8217;s a lot I had to learn to determine that. Here are some of the things I figured out.</p>
<p>1. The foundation, just like in the skyscraper example, has to be there before you start worrying about what paint to put on the exterior. For fitness this is muscle.</p>
<p>Aerobics worked fine for me when I was 20-years-old because at 20 I naturally had a high percentage of lean muscle mass. But, at 40, I had to focus on it and had to build that foundation first before focusing on aerobics. The reason is that aerobics, while great for your heart and your waistline, slows down muscle growth and even stops or reverses it at extremes.</p>
<p>So the first trick is to begin by causing your muscles to grow. And overshoot your muscle goals before layering on the aerobics. Understanding this can save you lots of frustration, and get you back to the &quot;I want it all&quot; mindset that we all deserve from our fitness efforts.</p>
<p>2. All workouts are not created equal. Different methods of working out accomplish different things. Just like you wouldn&#8217;t take art classes to learn business, you don&#8217;t run to build muscle, and you don&#8217;t lift heavy to burn fat. Knowing, and planning for, the different types of effects of different types of exercises can save you tons of wasted time.</p>
<p>3. Your body isn&#8217;t on internet time. I&#8217;ve tried for a long time to find a different way to put this, but I still haven&#8217;t come up with a clearer analogy: from conception of a baby to birth takes nine months. This is true regardless of how many couples there are or how enthusiastically they try. In each case it simply takes nine months.</p>
<p>Your body&#8217;s transformation takes time as well. Knowing what is realistic will put you on the consistent improvement track. Trying to do things that aren&#8217;t realistic will not achieve faster results, but worse ones.</p>
<p>You can have it all. I&#8217;m about to turn 49 now and last year I learned to ski. In fact, I not only learned, but I was swooshing down the black diamond slopes along with the 20-year-olds. I haven&#8217;t slam-dunked a basketball yet, but it&#8217;s just a matter of time.</p>
